What is Emergency Heat?
Emergency heat is a feature on thermostat systems, usually for heat pumps, that allows your main heater to run on a backup system, such as oil, gas, electric, or hot water. It may be labeled “EM heat.” Some heat pumps may tap into this backup system automatically when temperatures fall below 35° Fahrenheit, but you should only turn it on manually in the case of an emergency.
If you switch this setting on manually, your secondary heat source will do all the work alone, which uses a lot of energy. It’s a great tool to use while you wait for an HVAC technician to arrive, particularly if you are worried about cold-sensitive family members or employees. However, it will lead to higher energy bills, so try to use it sparingly, and make sure to call Patriot Service to get your primary heat source back up and running as quickly as possible!
